Don't Quit- Weekend Post
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow--
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out--
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

The Mighty- Weekend Post
At the edge of a forest, stood a big tree. Its branches spread out majestically and so did its roots. It shielded people from the sun under its shady leaves, and provided shelter to countless birds and other small creatures in its branches. It buzzed with activity all the time.
At the foot of the tree grew a little plant. The plant was willowy and delicate, and tended to keel over at the touch of the slightest breeze.
One day, the two neighbours were having a little chat.
"Well, little one," said the tree to the plant, "Why do you not plant your feet deeply in the ground, and raise your head boldly in the air as I do?"
"I see no need to do so," whispered the plant with a smile. "Actually, I think I may be safer this way."
"Safer!" sneered the tree. "Are you suggesting that you're safer than I am? Do you know how deep my roots are buried, how thick and strong my trunk is? Even if two men hold hands they would not be able to surround my trunk. Who could possibly pluck me by the roots or bow my head to the ground?"
And the tree turned away from the plant in a great huff.
But the tree was to regret its words very soon. One evening a great hurricane arose in the region. It hurled the trees off their roots and almost completely destroyed the forest. It uprooted the neem tree and hurled it away with great force.
When the storm had passed, the villagers living nearby surveyed the damage. Mighty trees that had once almost touched the sky, were now reduced to stumps or worse. The forest was littered with their carcasses.
But there was one exception. The little plant. The plant had been tossed and turned under the fury of the hurricane, and bent completely. But when the hurricane ended, it sighed and stood upright again.
No trace remained of its mighty neighbour though.

American Folklore- Weekend Post
Now Rabbit had a favorite place on the river where he always went to drink water. It was on a bend in the river, and two Snakes lived there, one on the upper side of the bend and one on the lower. Rabbit soon learned that neither of the Snakes knew that the other Snake lived there.
Ho, ho, ho, thought Rabbit. I am going to have a bit of fun! Rabbit went to the Snake that lived on the upper bend of the river. "I am a very strong Rabbit," he told the Snake. "I bet I can pull you right out of the water." "I bet you can't!" said the Snake, who was very strong indeed. "I will go get a grape vine," said Rabbit. "You will pull one end and I will pull the other. "If I pull you out of the water, I win the contest. If you pull me into the water, then I win." The Snake on the upper bend agreed. Then Rabbit went to the Snake on the lower bend and made the same deal. He told both Snakes that he would be standing out of sight on top of the river bank and would give a whoop when he was in place and ready to start the contest. Both Snakes were pleased with the arrangement. They were sure they would win against such a feeble little Rabbit. Rabbit took a long grape vine and strung it across the wide bend in the river. He handed one end to the first Snake and the other end to the second Snake. Then he gave a loud whoop from the middle of the river bank and the two Snakes started tugging and pulling with all their might. "That Rabbit is really strong," thought the Snake on the upper bank. He would tug and tug and the vine would come a little closer to him and then he would nearly be pulled out of the water. "My, Rabbit is much stronger than he appears," thought the Snake on the lower bank after he was almost hurled out of the water by an extra strong pull from up the river. Rabbit sat on the bank above both Snakes and laughed and laughed. The Snakes heard him laughing and realized that they had been fooled. Letting go of the rope, they swam to the middle of the bend and met each other for the first time. Both Snakes were angry with Rabbit for making them look foolish. They agreed that Rabbit could no longer drink from his favorite place on the river bend where they lived. In spite of his protests, they sent Rabbit away and would not let him come down to the riverbank anymore. So whenever Rabbit grew thirsty, he had to turn himself into a faun in order to get a drink from the river. After that, Rabbit decided not to play any more jokes on Snakes.

Jamaican Festivals- Weekend Post
International Reggae Day is a blowout musical festival in Jamaica. Usually celebrated in July, this festival hosts not only musical talent shows, but a talent search, workshops and a lecture on the life of reggae icon, Bob Marley. This concert is broadcast live all over the world via satellite television and the Internet.
Reggae Sumfest takes place the first week in August each year in Montego Bay. The best in reggae are brought together for a week of sonic celebration. Visitors can purchase tickets for just one night of partying or can spend a little more and get weekend passes, or even a pass for the whole week. Some tickets even include backstage passes. Some reggae artists that perform at this event include Beenie Man, Elephant Man, Sean Paul, Vybz Kartel, Mavado and many others. In addition to this, there is sometimes an international festival that takes place in which international singers come and perform. For example, Toni Braxton performed at the event in the summer of 2009 for the first time. Without a doubt, Reggae Sumfest is a great way to enjoy a week of music. Folktales tell a story
Well now, that rascal Brer Fox hated Brer Rabbit on account of he was always cutting capers and bossing everyone around. So Brer Fox decided to capture and kill Brer Rabbit if it was the last thing he ever did! He thought and he thought until he came up with a plan. He would make a tar baby! Brer Fox went and got some tar and he mixed it with some turpentine and he sculpted it into the figure of a cute little baby. Then he stuck a hat on the Tar Baby and sat her in the middle of the road.Brer Fox hid himself in the bushes near the road and he waited and waited for Brer Rabbit to come along. At long last, he heard someone whistling and chuckling to himself, and he knew that Brer Rabbit was coming up over the hill. As he reached the top, Brer Rabbit spotted the cute little Tar Baby. Brer Rabbit was surprised. He stopped and stared at this strange creature. He had never seen anything like it before! "Good Morning," said Brer Rabbit, doffing his hat. "Nice weather we're having." The Tar Baby said nothing. Brer Fox laid low and grinned an evil grin. Brer Rabbit tried again. "And how are you feeling this fine day?"
The Tar Baby, she said nothing. Brer Fox grinned an evil grin and lay low in the bushes.
Brer Rabbit frowned. This strange creature was not very polite. It was beginning to make him mad.
"Ahem!" said Brer Rabbit loudly, wondering if the Tar Baby were deaf. "I said 'HOW ARE YOU THIS MORNING?"
The Tar Baby said nothing. Brer Fox curled up into a ball to hide his laugher. His plan was working perfectly!
"Are you deaf or just rude?" demanded Brer Rabbit, losing his temper. "I can't stand folks that are stuck up! You take off that hat and say 'Howdy-do' or I'm going to give you such a lickin'!"
The Tar Baby just sat in the middle of the road looking as cute as a button and saying nothing at all. Brer Fox rolled over and over under the bushes, fit to bust because he didn't dare laugh out loud.
"I'll learn ya!" Brer Rabbit yelled. He took a swing at the cute little Tar Baby and his paw got stuck in the tar.
"Lemme go or I'll hit you again," shouted Brer Rabbit. The Tar Baby, she said nothing.
"Fine! Be that way," said Brer Rabbit, swinging at the Tar Baby with his free paw. Now both his paws were stuck in the tar, and Brer Fox danced with glee behind the bushes.
"I'm gonna kick the stuffin' out of you," Brer Rabbit said and pounced on the Tar Baby with both feet. They sank deep into the Tar Baby. Brer Rabbit was so furious he head-butted the cute little creature until he was completely covered with tar and unable to move.
Brer Fox leapt out of the bushes and strolled over to Brer Rabbit. "Well, well, what have we here?" he asked, grinning an evil grin.
Brer Rabbit gulped. He was stuck fast. He did some fast thinking while Brer Fox rolled about on the road, laughing himself sick over Brer Rabbit's dilemma.
"I've got you this time, Brer Rabbit," said Brer Fox, jumping up and shaking off the dust. "You've sassed me for the very last time. Now I wonder what I should do with you?"
Brer Rabbit's eyes got very large. "Oh please Brer Fox, whatever you do, please don't throw me into the briar patch."
"Maybe I should roast you over a fire and eat you," mused Brer Fox. "No, that's too much trouble. Maybe I'll hang you instead."
"Roast me! Hang me! Do whatever you please," said Brer Rabbit. "Only please, Brer Fox, please don't throw me into the briar patch."
"If I'm going to hang you, I'll need some string," said Brer Fox. "And I don't have any string handy. But the stream's not far away, so maybe I'll drown you instead."
"Drown me! Roast me! Hang me! Do whatever you please," said Brer Rabbit. "Only please, Brer Fox, please don't throw me into the briar patch."
"The briar patch, eh?" said Brer Fox. "What a wonderful idea! You'll be torn into little pieces!"
Grabbing up the tar-covered rabbit, Brer Fox swung him around and around and then flung him head over heels into the briar patch. Brer Rabbit let out such a scream as he fell that all of Brer Fox's fur stood straight up. Brer Rabbit fell into the briar bushes with a crash and a mighty thump. Then there was silence.
Brer Fox cocked one ear toward the briar patch, listening for whimpers of pain. But he heard nothing. Brer Fox cocked the other ear toward the briar patch, listening for Brer Rabbit's death rattle. He heard nothing.
Then Brer Fox heard someone calling his name. He turned around and looked up the hill. Brer Rabbit was sitting on a log combing the tar out of his fur with a wood chip and looking smug.
"I was bred and born in the briar patch, Brer Fox," he called. "Born and bred in the briar patch."
And Brer Rabbit skipped away as merry as a cricket while Brer Fox ground his teeth in rage and went home.

The Two Americas
Based on Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech, he believes there is two Americas. In simplicity, Dr. King means that one America has an abundance of jobs and opportunity for its citizens. On the other hand, he speaks of the lack of respect for African- Americans and how African- Americans have no jobs and even if they do have jobs, their pay is severely low compared to white people. Today, I do think that racism is still about in the world, but we do not see many cases of racism today. -
In addition, the majority of all people are given the same opportunity when it comes to jobs. Due to the recession the country is in now, there are not as many jobs which means that the country is not really overflowing with an abundance of milk and honey. Similarly, the other America today is poor. The Declaration of Independence says that all men are created equally, so why should anyone be treated differently.

High School Student Tasered at a Basketball Game
Click Here for CW Pittsburgh News Article
Click Here for Fox News Article
Recently, I have read the news and learned that a high school student was tasered after a basketball game at his school. First off, a taser is an electroshock weapon that uses electrical current to disrupt voluntary control of muscles. In my opinion, the officer and the school staff was to be blamed. The officer seemed to carelessly use his taser on the student when the student technically didn't do anything wrong. The officer should have took action in different ways by handcuffing the student to keep him still and try to resolve the matter. The staff as well did nothing to aid in the situation. As I watched the video, I didn't see any adult try to aid in the situation by at least trying to clear the hallway with all the students. Despite the fact that the student did play an active role in what was happening, he should partially take the blame. This is because the student should have respected the authority of the officer. He should have stood still knowing that if he made sudden movement, the officers would immediately take action.

Battered & Abused Women
I have heard many cases in which men have physically, verbally, and mentally abused women. In my opinion, no man should ever place his hands on another woman. In fact he should never put his hands on any one. Despite the fact that woman can and sometimes do abuse men, statistics have shown that men are the ones who mainly abuse their parteners or spouses. When men physically abuse women, they do such things as push them down stairs, hit, punch, or kick them. Some people may think that verball abuse is not that bad or it is not as bad as physical abuse, but in reality, verbal abuse can be just as harmful as physical abuse. When men are verbally abuse, they call their spouse or partners names. Some signs of abuse are:
1. You are belittled by your partner
2. Your partner humiliates you in front of company
3. You feel afraid of your partner
4. Critisize you/ Makes you feel worthless
5. Believe you deserve to be hurt or tormented
6. Harms you in any way, shape, or form
No one deserves to be abused. If you feel you are a victim of abuse get help!

Teen Pregnancy
There are many issues that face teens today. One of these is teen pregnancy. Recently, I have come across an article that speaks about an eleven year old who delivered a baby. Whe we normally read of teen pregnanacies, we think of girls between the ages of 15 and 19. However, this was not the case. The young lady who delivered the baby will have some growing up to do very quickly. At the age of eleven, a person is unable to obtain a job. With this being said, the girl is not able to support herself, let alone a newborn baby. Many people may think taking care of baby is fairly easy and inexpensive. In reality, diapers are costly, and so are other necessities like doctor's visits, and clothes. CLothes of course, are expensive because we all know that babies can grow really fast. Everyone makes mistake, but the mistake this young lady made can possibly ruin her future plans. To see the article about the eleven year old girl who delivered a baby Click Here

Haiti Disaster
This past week on Tuesday a high magnitude earthquake struck Haiti leaving buildings destroyed, a lack of necessities and worst of all, lifeless bodies. An estimate is said that 50,000 people have died due to this Haiti. Due to the fact that airports have been destroyed, it is difficult for countries to send in aid. What surprises me the most is that doctors are willing to sacrifice seriously wounded people for the people who have minor injuries. I do understand the fact that there are only a certain amount of doctors and physicians, but I still think there should be a balance between the care given to people who are seriously wounded and the ones who are not. When I heard of the disaster, I thought of donating the clothes that were too small or the clothes that I don't wear at all. Many people within Haiti and outside of Haiti are still trying to locate family members and I myself am hoping that their family members are found. Anyone willing to donate financially or lend a helping hand is encouraged to contact the Red Cross or any other foundation that is making an effort to help the people in Haiti. Who knew a natural disaster can do such much harm to a country?
